Leading Editor Awards 2009

Awards for Excellence

The Leading Editor awards acknowledge the high commitment Editors have to their journals and reward their efforts to raise and maintain the standing of the journals.  In recognition of this work, we reward the following editors:

Michael Powers
Temple University, Philadelphia, USA
Journal of Risk Finance

Professor Michael R. Powers is Professor of Risk Management and Insurance at Temple University's Fox School of Business, and Distinguished Visiting Professor of Finance at Tsinghua University's School of Economics and Management. Michael is an excellent Editor, and has been working on the Journal of Risk Finance since 2004. Under his editorship, the journal has improved in quality, and recognition, and this has led to a submission of the journal to Thomson Reuters (ISI) for evaluation.

Professor Powers' research covers a wide range of regulatory and public-policy issues, including insurer profitability and solvency, the tax treatment of hedging instruments and other risk transfers, and no-fault automobile insurance legislation. He has edited two scholarly books and has published in over seventy journal articles and book chapters.

Walter Leal Filho
Hamburg University of Applied Sciences, Hamburg, Germany
Management of Environmental Quality and the International Journal of Sustainability in Higher Education

Prof Leal Filho is Director of the Research and Transfer Centre "Applications of Life Sciences" at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences and teaches on environmental information, education, communication and management issues at various European universities. He is a honorary professor at the A I Open University, University of Blageovgrad, University of Rezekne, University of Applied Sciences Zittau-Görlitz and a visiting professor at various other universities. He has over 20 years of research experience on all aspects of environmental information and education and has a particular interest on the connections between environmental management, sustainability, climate and human behaviour.

This year Walther has launched a new journal with Emerald, the International Journal of Climate Change Strategies and Management, and has also organised and chaired the Klima 2008 conference – a CO2 friendly online climate conference. From the start of the 2009 volume, both Management of Environmental Quality: An International Journal and the International Journal of Sustainability in Higher Education will be submitted for evaluation to ISI, a reflection of the work Walter has done to futher improve the quality of both titles.

Steve O'Connor
The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Kowloon, Hong Kong
Library Management

Steve O’Connor is the University Librarian, Hong Kong Polytechnic University.  He has held a number of equivalent posts in tertiary education in Australia and, as the Chief Executive Officer of a large Australian Consortium developed, managed projects and programs to serve the library industry.

Steve has extensive experience in managing large and small organisations, both income and expenditure-based.     His work demonstrates a research and futures focus, which has been developed to ensure library and information services achieve relevant, efficient and cost-beneficial outcomes for all stakeholders.

Steve has researched, published, spoken, consulted and taught extensively in the areas of change, organisational management, information delivery, collection transition, scenario and strategic planning, and the wider library and information environment.   He enjoys foundational and critical ongoing involvement in the development and implementation of digital information services, and in the provision of consortia strategies for service and financial improvement.

Currently, Steve is focused on the creation of new and sustainable business models for the future of libraries.  He is also the Editor of the international, peer reviewed journal, Library Management and the Library Management China. He has been currently researching publishing in Asia.

Steve’s significant work over a number of years has earned him both domestic and international recognition and respect.

Bo Edvardsson
University of Karlstad, Sweden
Journal of Service Management

Bo Edvardsson is Professor of Business Administration and Director of the Service Research Center (CTF) at the University of Karlstad, Sweden. He has been editor of the Journal of Service Management (formerly International Journal of Service Industry Management) since 2005, during which time he and his assistant Ingrid Hansson have been instrumental to the success of the journal. He has also built an active Editorial Advisory Board comprising leading international academics. Bo is an international authority in the field of service management, having managed several important projects and also written or contributed to over 130 books, reports and research articles. He is on the editorial board for five scholarly journals and co-chair of the Quality in Services Symposium (QUIS). His research focuses on service quality, new service development, dynamics in customer relationships and value creation through customer experiences. In 2008, Bo was awarded the prestigious award of ‘RESER Commendation for Lifetime Achievement to Service Scholarship’.

Andrew and Margaret Taylor
University of Bradford, UK
International Journal of Operations & Production Management

Professors Andrew Taylor and Margaret Taylor have been Editors of International Journal of Operations & Production Management (IJOPM) since 2004. During this time they have worked tirelessly to continue the development of this esteemed journal. Their hard work has been reflected in the increased journal impact factor of 1.054 in 2007, the exceptionally high number of downloads (over 414,000 in 2008) and the inclusion of IJOPM in several international ranking systems.

Andrew and Margaret have played an active part in the Operations Management (OM) community during their time as editors, representing IJOPM on the Board of the European Operations Management Association and presenting the annual Distinguished Scholar Award of the OM track at the Academy of Management in the USA. They have supported new authors through judging the Emerald/EFMD Outstanding Doctoral Research Awards and by taking part in the 1st Workshop on Journal Publication for Non-Native English Speaking Researchers in OM and NPDM at Nice-Sophia-Antipolis, France in 2008. A workshop facilitating non-native English-speaking researchers to participate in international networks and increase their publications in recognized international academic journals, such as IJOPM.

Andrew and Margaret will step down as Editors of IJOPM at the end of the 2009 volume and take up a position on the Editorial Advisory Board.

Alex Douglas
Liverpool John Moores University
The TQM Journal

Dr Alex Douglas has been Editor of The TQM Journal (formerly The TQM Magazine) since 2005 and has demonstrated an exceptionally high level of enthusiasm and commitment.

The TQM Journal has developed in quality under Alex’s leadership and now benefits from a rigorous double-blind peer review process, increased submissions and regular, topical special issues. The name of the journal was changed in 2007 to reflect these changes.
