Adaptive Building Services Design and Control in the Climate Change emergency

Closes:
Submission deadline date: 31 December 2024

Introduction

During the last ten years a change in the Climate patterns is consistently evidenced by the meteorological data collected from the plethora of sources available. A significant increment in the magnitude and variety of changes in the boundary conditions that affect the built environment should be reflected in a change in the way we design and control our building systems. These changes affect each and every one of the Sustainable Development Goals that we aim to meet as a society facing the future.

This Special Issue aims to increase visibility and knowledge to resiliently adapt for changes to come and participate in reducing the impact of building and control systems in the environment, societal, and economical impact of climate change in the decades to come. In response to increasing legislative pressures and a further need to keep indoor and outdoor conditions balanced in an ever changing climate, calls for environmental responsibility, and need to meet changing customer preferences, we need to apply our knowledge and technologies such as extended reality, Human-assisted AI, Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and Mixed Reality (MR) to achieve an lifecycle and sustainable approach to the built environment systems, including such as of data centres, urban microclimates and the ageing housing stock.

The focus of this special issue is to show current research on solutions for sustainable building energy systems performance, simulation, and design to allow the grow of circularity and LCA approach to these highly impacting part of our built environment. Aspects as design, manufacturing, reuse, repurpose, AI supported solutions to problems dealt with simulations until now and how the upcome of this developing technology will support the sector in devising the solutions for an ever changing, ever challenging for keeping the indoor conditions at optimal level while minimizing the impact in the environment, economy, and social sustainability.
