Introduction
The aim of this special issue is to examine the evolution of events education and to explore its value to the continuing development of the events industry. Articles will be focussed on how educators can best respond to the current challenging HE environment and prepare the future workforce for work in an ever-evolving, fast-paced sector. In order to meet this aim, the special issue invites papers that showcase innovative approaches to event education pedagogy, the value of event education, and the future of event education.
Fletcher et al. (2022) suggest that there is now a strong indication that events is becoming a mature and diverse academic field – over the last 20 years we have certainly seen a strong growth in event-based research. At the same time, the growth in event management degrees has been rapid, and it is now widely taught and popular with students. However, whilst research into events has grown significantly, we still know very little about events education.
In 2017, Park and Park suggested that education in events is under-researched and a review of current literature suggests not much has changed. There are small pockets of research into the way in which events is taught, and the outcomes of event education – for example, a handful of papers examine education / career development (e.g. Fletcher et al., 2022; Olson, et al., 2021) and some that focus on educating the event management graduate (e.g. Barron & Ali-Knight, 2017; Bladen & Kennell, 2014; Walters, 2021). A few scholars have published research that highlight the importance of links between education and the event industry (e.g. Venske, 2021; Lamb, 2015). However, this is neither a significant body of work, and nor does it reflect the now global nature of event management education.
The covid-19 pandemic exposed the fragility of events (Janiszewska et al., 2021) and presented challenges to event educators – student numbers dipped, presumably because of the near total collapse of the industry. As the industry recovers, educators must reflect on how they can build resilience into their event education. This will be the first special issue to examine the evolution and value of higher education in events and how to future proof the event curriculum. We welcome submissions that cover the value of events education and its relationship with the event industry. .
