The Editors of AEAT encourage authors with longer manuscript to submit any content that is not fundamental to the meaning of the article as supplementary materials via ScholarOne. The supplementary materials will then be made available on Emerald Insight alongside the main text of the article.

What is supplementary material?

Supplementary material is information that supports the reader’s understanding of the article. This means that it should not contain any content that is critical to the understanding of the main body of text. It can be in the form of additional data, tables, appendices, or media content.

Authors can choose to host supplementary material on Insight, Emerald’s content hosting platform, or on an institutional or personal repository.

Extensive supplementary material may be subject to peer review; this is at the discretion of the journal Editor and dependent on the content of the material (for example, whether including it would support the reviewer make a decision on the article during the peer review process).

Q) What are the benefits of including supplementary material?

A) It makes the article more discoverable, as it gives readers another way of finding the research, and supplementary material can be cited and increase the impact of the work.

Q) How should supplementary material be included in an article in order to have it hosted on Emerald Insight?

A) All supplementary material should be included in the submission of the article. Files should be labelled in such a way that makes it clear they are supplementary; Emerald recommends that the file name is descriptive and that it follows the format ‘Supplementary_material_appendix_1’ or ‘Supplementary tables’. All supplementary material must be mentioned at the appropriate moment in the main text of the article. During the production process of an article, Emerald will not make any changes to the material; it will not be copyedited, typeset, and authors will not receive proofs. Emerald therefore strongly recommends that all supplementary material is styled by the author ahead of acceptance of the article. A link to the supplementary material will be added to the article during production, and the material will be made available alongside the main text of the article at the point of EarlyCite publication.

Q) What file types can be hosted on Emerald Insight?

A) Emerald Insight can host the following file types and extensions:

• Image (.png, .jpeg)
• Plain ASCII text (.txt)
• PostScript (.ps)

Q) How should supplementary material be included in an article when the material is hosted on an institutional or personal repository?

A) The supplementary material must be hosted on the repository ahead of submission, and the author should include a link to the repository within the article. It is the responsibility of the submitting author to ensure that the material is free to access and that it remains permanently available.

Q) Is supplementary material included in the word count for the article?

A) No; however, supplementary material should not be used as a means to submit excessively long articles. Authors should make best efforts to remain within the word count for the journal.

Q) Will the Journal Editor check whether the supplementary material is of sufficient quality for publication?

A) It is the responsibility of the submitting author to ensure the quality and accuracy of the material. If the material is included as part of the peer review process, the reviewers and journal Editor may also assess its quality and relevance.

Q) Can the supplementary material include suggestions for further reading or references for the main article?

A) Emerald recommends that references relevant to the main article are not included in supplementary material, as they will not be live links and will not contribute to citations. Further reading lists can be submitted.

Q) If an article has already been published on Emerald Insight, can author(s) retrospectively add supplementary to it?

A) No. Supplementary material must be submitted prior to acceptance.

Q) Can the supplementary material be added or updated after publication of the article?

A) No, once published the supplementary material is considered as part of the Version of Record for the article. No further changes, whether corrections, replacement, or removal, will be permitted.

Q) Is supplementary material free to access?

A) Yes, all supplementary material is free to access.
