Managing Your Library Interviews

Sue McKnight has been director of libraries and knowledge resources at Nottingham Trent University since August 2004. Originally from Australia, she was educated at the Queensland Institute of Technology and the University of Queensland, and holds professional library qualifications from the Australian Library and Information Association. Before arriving in the UK, she was executive director and university librarian at Deakin University, and was named manager of the year by the Australian Library and Information Association in 1999. Describing herself as "an unashamed managerialist", she prides herself on being a good leader and able to talk the language of her stakeholders, whether it is asset utilization and return on investment to the chief finance officer, or pedagogy and learning outcomes to an academic.

Ralph Kiel, associate librarian, information systems at the University of Western Australia, Perth discusses how the "re-placing the library" scheme, launched as part of the university's strategic plan 2005-2007 has transformed the library's services.

Jill Taylor-Roe is head of Liaison & Academic Services, Newcastle University Library, which has been awarded the Charter Mark, the UK Government's recognition of excellence in customer service in the public sector, five times in succession. Jill was interviewed at the Online Information Conference in 2007.

Hazel Woodward is university librarian and director of the University Press at Cranfield, a post she has held for over seven years. Previously she was head of Electronic Information Services at Loughborough University. She has a PhD in the area of electronic publishing and scholarly communication, and has also written several papers on digital library issues. She is on a number of professional committees including UKSG and JISC. Hazel spoke to editor, Margaret Adolphus, at the UKSG conference, April 2007 on the challenges at Cranfield.

Jill Emery became head librarian, Serials and Electronic Resources at the University of Texas Libraries at Austin after several years as director for the electronic resources programmes at the University of Houston. This interview was conducted as she prepared to take up the post.

Jane Kinney Meyers, founder of the Lubuto Library Project, is president and chairwoman of its board of directors. In this interview Jane talks to Emerald about managing the project.

Arnaud Pelle talks with Maurice Line. Maurice Line's library career began in 1950 when he became a trainee for the Bodleian Library in Oxford. In 1971 Maurice became a member of the body carrying out the preliminary planning for the British Library. From 1974-1985 he held the post of director-general, British Library Lending Division, and from 1985-1988 he was director-general of the British Library's Science, Technology and Industry Directorate.
