Aims and scope

The International Journal of Prison Health (IJOPH) – previously known as International Journal of Prisoner Health – provides a peer-reviewed platform for researchers, prison health experts, public policymakers and practitioners to share and learn from research and best practice.

The journal encompasses all stages of the criminal justice system to include police detention, migration detention centres, remand and sentenced prisons and initiatives that divert prisoners from custody.

IJOPH stimulates wider research by providing an outlet for publication for those who have an interest in health in prisons and other criminal justice settings.
 

Topics include:

  • prisoner health and wellbeing
  • prisoner health care services
  • resettlement/throughcare for prisoners
  • public health
  • health and illness among prisoners (e.g. chronic disease, mental illness, drug and alcohol use, self-harm)
  • impact of the physical environment on the well-being of staff, prisoners and the community 
  • juveniles, women and other groups of prisoners
  • women prisoners who have been victims of violence and abuse
  • violence and abuse in detention contexts.
     

 Submissions can include:

  • quantitative or qualitative analyses
