Accountability Journal

Celebrating 30 years 1987-2017

Celebrating 30-years of interdisciplinary management and accounting research in the Accounting, Auditing & Accountability journal.

Professor James Guthrie and Professor Lee Parker – Distinguished Professors of Accounting – are celebrating 30 years of being the joint founding editors of AAAJ.

This is their story.

Image: Accounting, Auditing & Accountability Journal. In 1987, two young accounting academics, James Guthrie and Lee Parker, saw the need for a new kind of scholarly accounting journal.

They wanted to provide a home for academic interdisciplinary accounting research that addressed new, innovative ideas, focusing on the interaction between accounting/auditing and their institutional, socio-economic, political and historical environment.

Today, with interdisciplinary accounting research as its core mission, the journal celebrates its 30th anniversary and has become internationally regarded as one of the leading journals in its field, ranked constantly in the top 10 globally by citations.

James and Lee's vision includes publishing a series of AAAJ special issues that are at the cutting edge of accounting research. These AAAJ special issues are frequently downloaded and encourage critical analysis of policy and practice, as well as promoting debate about the philosophies and traditions that underpin the accounting profession.

Unique amongst accounting journals is a literary section, encouraging poetry and other literary contributions that reflect on accounting's place in society.

To celebrate this milestone, the journal has selected some articles free to download for 6-months. These articles highlight the journal’s 30-year history, and also showcase some of the special issues that AAAJ publishes.

“AAAJ is about looking at accounting differently. When Lee and I brainstormed the idea of a new journal, we wanted to capture what the other accounting journals left out – society, the environment, and people. The journal has been warmly embraced by the accounting community. While 30 years makes AAAJ an established journal it doesn’t rest on its laurels. Being ‘alternative’ is what AAAJ is all about”.
