Introduction
The initial focus of the higher education internationalization policy in East Asian countries was developing a limited number of world-class universities as they strive to compete in the global knowledge economy; however, the emerging discussion on the internationalization of local universities has evolved as the local regions and communities face an imminent risk of disappearance due to aging and declining population. Local universities are now expected to be catalysts for regional development and cultural diplomacy. By leveraging their international networks and resources, universities are expected to enhance the global connectivity of local communities and industries and promote multicultural coexistence in their communities.
The present Special Issue (SI) of the International Journal of Comparative Education and Development calls for manuscript submissions with the main theme of Internationalization of Local Universities: Pathways to the Development of a Sustainable Regional/Local Society in East Asia.
List of topic areas
The SI intends to explore an emerging paradigm of higher education internationalization focusing on local universities in East Asia, whose essential mission is to play a pivotal role in local/regional sustainable development. Among other subthemes are:
- Local universities' internationalization strategies, objectives, and initiatives contribute to the sustainable development of the regions and communities they serve
- Trends of government policy on higher education internationalization, from elitism to inclusivity
- Culturally/regionally specific articulations and dynamics of higher education internationalization
- Changing definition of higher education internationalization as a discourse and its evolution
It will welcome articles on various empirical and conceptual topics, expanding previous discussions on higher education internationalization in East Asia. Papers employing innovative and underused methodological approaches or theoretical frameworks are especially welcomed, as are elaborated case studies in East Asia.
