Promote your journal

We explore the steps we take to promote your journal, as well as ideas and advice on how you can get involved.

Attending conferences increases awareness

We attend hundreds of conferences each year. These events offer a great opportunity to increase awareness of your journal and attract new authors and readership. They also provide us with a welcome opportunity to talk face to face with our editors, so if you see an Emerald stand, please drop by and say hello.

Wherever possible, we try to promote all journal titles relevant to the conference audience. When space on the conference stand is limited, we ensure that printed promotion – listing all relevant titles – is available to help delegates understand the breadth and depth of our collection.

What can you do?

  • If there is a conference you feel we should be attending, let us know. Please give your publisher plenty of notice so they can factor it into their annual plan.
  • Act as a journal ambassador at events and conferences. One of the ways you can do this is by running an author workshop or a “Meet the editor” session. Don’t forget to encourage other members of your editorial team (including board members) to do the same.
  • If you are speaking at a conference, let us know so we can share the news on our social media channels.

  • Download and print flyers for your journal.
  • If you are involved in a conference committee and there are other ways we can reach out to the delegates, please do get in touch.
  • While attending the conference, share your experiences via your social media channels. Don’t forget to check whether there’s a conference hashtag you can add to your post – this often leads to it being re-posted by the conference organisers.

Promotion through social media

We use a wide range of social media channels to promote our journals, including Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Pinterest and YouTube.

Follow us and join the conversation.

What can you do?

  • If you don’t already have one, set up your own social media account(s). You’ll find tips on our social media page, as well as links to the channels Emerald already has in place.
  • Follow people in your field – connect with your existing network and identify people you’d like to get to know.
  • Engage in conversations to build up your profile and network. Share links to topical articles and information about special issues.
  • Let us know about interesting or topical articles we can promote via the Emerald channels.
  • Make the most of social media opportunities at conferences. See the Conferences section on this page  for further tips.

Societies and associations

Establishing collaborations with societies and associations can be a useful way to reach new audiences.

You can promote your journal content to their members and consider making it freely available to them – this can help increase journal usage as well as attract new authors.

What can you do?

  • Let your Publisher know about any societies and/or associations that you would like the opportunity to work with.

Table of contents alerts

Readers can keep track of the latest published articles by subscribing to table of contents (ToC) alerts for your journal.

Each time the ToC is updated, an email is delivered to their inbox. The link to subscribe can be found on your journal landing page and the service is free.

What can you do?

  • Share the table of contents alerts link with your network.
  • Encourage your board members to sign up for the alerts and share the link and new alerts with their communities.

Journal landing pages

Your journal landing page highlights important information about your journal such as the aims and scope, editors and editorial board members, and author guidelines.  We’ve made sure that the page can easily be found by search engines like Google, so that your journal always appears high in their search results.

Ranking by search engines is important – over the past 12 months, more than 50% of our web traffic arrived via search engines, 92% of it from Google.

What can you do?

  • When writing your aims and scope, make sure you include terms and phrases commonly used in your field. These “keywords” will improve your journal’s ranking by search engines.

Email

We regularly email our authors to inform them about new developments. This encourages repeat authorship and readership. We also have in place a programme of campaigns to engage and attract new authors from around the globe.

What can you do?

  • If you’re emailing contacts about your journal, encourage them to share that message with their networks, increasing the reach.
  • Add details about your journal to your email signature so that everyone you communicate with sees it. If you would like us to create a journal email signature for you, please contact your Publisher.

Literati Awards

For more than 25 years now, Emerald’s annual Literati Awards have been celebrating and rewarding authors and reviewers.

We work hard to promote the winners (and your journal), and award recipients are always keen to publicise their success too.

What can you do?

  • Take the time to recommend authors and reviewers who have contributed to your journal when you receive the Literati Award nomination forms each December.
  • Promote any awards associated with your journal on social media and via your networks.

Promotion via Kudos

We have partnered with Kudos, a free web-based service that helps authors explain and share their research and measure the impact they’ve achieved. Their activities are a great way to promote the content in your journal.

Not familiar with Kudos? Talk with your publisher, it can provide interesting insights into your journal’s visibility.

What can you do?

  • Encourage authors to use Kudos when promoting articles published in your journal.

Empowering discovery and access

We work closely with industry partners to ensure authors, readers and librarians can swiftly locate the research published in your journal wherever, and whenever, they need it. This includes collaborating with service providers to simplify the discovery of Emerald content in search engines, library catalogues and indexers, as well as focusing on initiatives providing easy access to your content. You can find out more on our Discovery resources and Industry standards pages.

We also offer authors a range of open access publishing options to help them maximise visibility for their work. These are available for all Emerald journals; you can find out more on our open access journals page.

What can you do?

  • If you feel there’s a service you’d like to see us partner with, please let your Publisher know.
