19th February 2018

Bingley, United Kingdom, 19 February 2018The Century of Science: The Global Triumph of the Research University edited by Justin J. W. Powell David P. Baker and Frank Fernandez has won a much-coveted PROSE Award in the Education Theory category.

For 42 years, the PROSE Awards have recognized the best books, journals and digital content produced by professional and scholarly publishers. The entries are reviewed by a panel of 18 judges that includes editors, academics, publishers and research librarians who evaluate each work and its contribution to professional and scholarly publishing.

In The Century of Science, a multicultural, international team of authors examine the global rise of scholarly research in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and health (STEM+) fields.

This insightful book provides historical and sociological understandings of the ways that higher education has become an institution that, more than ever before, shapes science and society.

The Editors of The Century of Science - Justin J. W. Powell (University of Luxembourg, Luxembourg), David P. Baker and Frank Fernandez (both Pennsylvania State University, USA) - said in a joint statement:

“As Editors of The Century of Science - which presents results of a five-year global collaborative effort of researchers in North America, Europe, the Middle East, and East Asia to chart the pure exponential growth of science powered by the research university since 1900 - we are honoured that the book has been awarded the 2018 PROSE Award for Education Theory.

“Additionally, we are particularly pleased that the high quality of the path-breaking series International Perspectives on Education & Society published by Emerald has been recognized by the Association of American Publishers in this year’s Professional & Scholarly Excellence Awards."

The book contributes to our understanding of the growth of STEM+ research globally and, in particular, the importance of collaborative research in these subjects.

The scope and rigour of the project lays the groundwork for a wide range of new research possibilities in higher education and the research university as an institution.

When The Century of Science was also recently awarded the Award for Significant Research on International Higher Education by the Association for the Study of HE (ASHE), the judges said of it:

“The Committee was impressed by the longitudinal scope of the study, the rigorous application of econometric methods, and the attention to both intra-national and cross-national analyzes in the volume.

“The combination of these elements makes the volume truly innovative, and holds great potential to serve as a model for future research.”
