The concept of Quality 4.0 emerged with the focus on digital transformation brought forth by the Fourth Industrial Revolution, also known as Industry 4.0, aiming to create a connection between the digital and physical domains encompassing the integration of people, devices and processes.

Quality 4.0 can be seen as an approach based on the interaction and integration of emerging technologies, human intelligence, and systems in order to potentiate connectedness, intelligence and automation, aiming to achieve quality and organisational excellence (Radziwill, 2018). More specifically, Quality 4.0 is the “delivery of superior quality, using modern technology and data to augment the capabilities of both people and quality tools and methods” (Dias et al., 2022). This adaptation of traditional quality tools and techniques to new and powerful technologies can be a great asset for organisations, allowing them to take advantage of the technology by collecting and analysing great amounts of data in real-time, implementing new processes and products efficiently by incorporating new technology and materials, and effectively recognise and redefine stakeholders’ requirements and needs (Carvalho et al., 2021). Furthermore, the implementation of Quality 4.0 can impact an organisation's financial and social performance, environmental sustainability, and external business growth (Antony et al., 2022).

However, to achieve a successful transition to Quality 4.0, it is essential that organisations understand the concept and its importance in a clear and structured way (Dias et al., 2022). Additionally, the actual implementation of Quality 4.0 is still a recent effort without sufficient case studies, validated tools, or standardised processes that organisations can use to orient their transition. We invite researchers, scholars, practitioners, and experts in the field of Quality 4.0 to contribute to an edited volume that explores innovations, challenges, and perspectives in this burgeoning domain. The book aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of Quality 4.0 and its implications for organisations worldwide. We actively encourage the inclusion of Case Studies.

  • Applications of predictive quality
  • Challenges and limitations in pursuing Quality 4.0
