Overview
The future challenges for higher education in East Asia are still a largely unexplored thematic, and the literature that exists is mostly written by seasoned higher education researchers such as the work by one of the editors of this special issue (e.g., https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/aepr.12416). This special issue presents a unique opportunity to give voice to very early career higher education researchers to bring forth current and future challenges that they perceive to affect higher education in East Asia currently and in years to come. The objective is to present research work that focuses on a broad range of topics, conceptual frameworks and methodologies about challenges that are affecting and will affect higher education in East Asia. This special issue, essentially contributed by postgraduate students as single authors, provides a unique empowerment of the work and is a key motivating factor for the development of future researchers and research in the field of higher education. It is also a perfect way for HEED to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Higher Education Evaluation and Accreditation Council of Taiwan (HEEACT) as a platform for young academics in higher education research.
