Introduction
Aims of the Special Issue
The primary aim of this Special Issue (SI) is to explore the evolving relationship between
entrepreneurship and biodiversity, focusing on how entrepreneurial activities can strategically
contribute to sustainable economic growth while supporting ecosystem regeneration. The SI aims to
highlight the role of innovative business models, systemic innovation, and digital tools in addressing
biodiversity challenges. This will be achieved by providing a comprehensive analysis of the diverse
orientations within modern entrepreneurship (e.g., sustainable, green, digital, and collective
entrepreneurship) and examining specific strategies for integrating biodiversity-positive practices
into core business operations. Additionally, the SI seeks to facilitate a constructive dialogue among
scholars and practitioners, leveraging case studies to showcase pioneering examples and offering
actionable insights to align entrepreneurial initiatives with the UN Sustainable Development Goals
(SDGs).
Originality of the Special Issue
This Special Issue makes a novel contribution by positioning entrepreneurship as a key driver of
biodiversity conservation, addressing a gap in the current research landscape. It provides an
interdisciplinary perspective on the intersection of entrepreneurship, strategic management and
ecosystem restoration, offering a framework for understanding how startups and innovative business
models can achieve biodiversity-positive outcomes. The focus on digital transformation and the
entrepreneurial mindset as tools for ecosystem monitoring and management introduces a fresh angle
to the discussion, exploring an under-researched area in entrepreneurship and strategic management
studies. Furthermore, the emphasis on practical, bottom-up approaches involving community
engagement provides new insights into how local actions can contribute to achieving global
biodiversity targets, paving the way for future research in this emerging field.
Topicality
The intersection of entrepreneurship and biodiversity is underexplored, despite increasing
recognition in the literature of the potential for innovative business models to drive ecosystem
regeneration. While studies have highlighted green and sustainable entrepreneurship, few have
focused specifically on integrating biodiversity into business practices and disclosing their strategic
role. This Special Issue aims to address this gap, offering a platform for examining how
entrepreneurial ventures can contribute to biodiversity-positive outcomes. Global policy
developments, such as the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and alignment with
the UN SDGs, underscore the societal urgency for biodiversity conservation. Entrepreneurs are
positioned to play a crucial role through new technologies and nature-based solutions, yet existing
research has not fully captured their potential in scaling these efforts or integrating them into broader
conservation strategies. This Special Issue will build on foundational studies in sustainable
entrepreneurship and respond to calls for deeper exploration of biodiversity-focused business
strategies. It seeks to provide interdisciplinary insights, empirical evidence, and practical examples,
contributing to the ongoing debate and addressing significant societal implications of biodiversity loss.
