Introduction

This special issue of the Journal of Aggression, Conflict and Peace Research remit will aim to highlight the diverse forms of harm experienced by military personnel, often misperceived as solely inflicting pain on others. Popular discourse throughout history has created the entrenched notion of the soldier as the one who inflicts pain on others. Taking an interdisciplinary approach, the special issue will examine issues such as mental health, hyper-masculinized gender roles, sexual abuse, genocide, and veterans' reintegration into society. It will also explore policy interventions on the rights and well-being of soldiers in training, during service, and when transitioning back to civilian life. As such, it will contribute to these research areas. The special issue focus will help raise awareness on the need for improved policy on the rights and well-being of soldiers in training, during service and when transiting back to civilian life, whether members of standing armies or terrorist organizations.
