New open access programme FAQs

Since its launch in 2019, we’ve been listening to our community of authors to ensure EOR meets their needs and expectations of publishing using a full open research model, including rapid publication, open peer review and commentary.
We have learnt that, while a number of researchers in the social sciences are ready to embrace fully open research workflows, many still wish to publish in journals with traditional citation-based metrics; many need to develop more confidence and experience in managing open data; and many need to be incentivised to embrace this new model.
As a result of these findings, we have decided to close Emerald Open Research and will be pivoting to launch a new programme of Gold Open Access (OA) Journals, aligned to major societal priorities expressed through the Sustainable Development Goals.
The Emerald Open Research platform will close at the end of 2023, with the platform now closed to new submissions.
There are several options available:
- You can publish your research in a full open peer review model with F1000 – find out more on F1000: Discover open publishing Platforms for your research.
- Find out about the various ways you can publish your research open access within a journal or book with Emerald on Open research at Emerald. You can publish open access in any of our journals through our Gold, Green and Platinum routes. We also offer open access publishing across all our book formats.
- You can also publish your journal open access with Emerald. We offer an open access partnership program called Emerald Publishing Services (EPS) where we would help publish your journal online on our dedicated research platform as an open access journal. F1000 has decided not to archive the EOR platform, but we are exploring options for authors to host their content within Emerald publications instead.

Your publishing journey will continue on EOR until December 2023. From then, if you have not completed your journey, you will be given the option to transfer to our new Gold Open Access journals.
We have a single rate APC of £2,695/$3,638/€3,099 for publishing in a hybrid or fully open access journal.
This covers the cost of turning a manuscript into a published article and dissemination to the widest audience. On EOR the APCs were based on article type.
This is in recognition of the varying editorial time and effort involved in publishing different article types.
Yes, you may submit to one of our new Gold Open Access journals.

The journals welcome all types of research articles including original research articles (technical papers and conceptual papers), case studies, reviews (literature, systematic, or general), methods, policy briefs, viewpoints, and editorials.
All our content published open access, whether via the green or gold OA route, is fully and rigorously peer reviewed. This process will be managed by the editorial team. The payment of an APC for gold OA is independent of, and holds no bias over, the editorial and peer review processes.
