Our stance

We want to influence positive change, whether it’s the future of research assessment, open access or finding new ways to make research more accessible and discoverable.

Making real impact happen

Our real impact manifesto describing the types of change we’d like to see and access our tools and resources to help make it happen.

We refer to impact as the provable effects of research in the real world. We launched real impact to call on research communities to come together and break down barriers.

Our impact manifesto

Acting responsibly

We believe in taking responsibility and working collaboratively with our partners, communities and colleagues to make a positive impact on a local and global scale.

Equity & participation

We represent researchers from communities across more than 100 countries, and we believe – now more than ever – that research is most impactful when diverse voices are included.

Environment & sustainability

Like so many people and organisations, our goal is to make measurable changes to the planet, not only as a business but as individuals too..

More on environment & sustainability

Our commitment extends to commissioning a broader range of research outputs, moving ‘beyond the journal’ and recognising that ‘research is not article shaped’. Working with our communities, we will discover and experiment with new forms of digital content to help researchers better tell the story of their work. Our aim is to contribute to the development of new best practices to help members of the community learn from each other and create positive change.

Our stance on DORA

In February 2019 we were one of the first publishers to sign up to DORA, the Declaration on Research Assessment, supporting its vision. A core thrust of DORA is that journal-based metrics are often misused and ill applied in research and researcher evaluation. Signing DORA is a natural extension to Emerald’s commitment to driving positive change, working in partnership with communities across and beyond the research ecosystem.

SDG Publishers Compact

We are delighted to be a founding signatory of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) Publishers Compact, which is designed to inspire action among publishers, and accelerate progress to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. This makes a clear commitment to the underlying principles of developing sustainable practices and acting as champion of the SDGs during the Decade of Action (2020–2030), publishing content that will help inform, develop and inspire action in that direction. We have long sought to challenge the status quo in the market; thinking differently about our content programme and creating new impact barometers that more accurately reflected the modern research era.
