The two companies are delighted to announce the winners who stood out from the crowd of incredibly high calibre entries.
Now in its eleventh year, the long standing competition collaboration between Emerald and the Association of African Business Schools (AABS) was established to encourage and promote the development of high-quality teaching cases that are grounded in the realities of dynamic and emerging economies whilst promoting case-writing capabilities in Africa.
Gabi Rundle, Cases Publisher at Emerald said, "With the rise of experiential learning, case studies remain a fundamental teaching tool in every subject area within the business school discipline. Those cases with a local focus are critical to developing business school curriculum. Both Emerald and AABS are devoted to developing high-quality cases focused on the region, and we were incredibly impressed with the excellent examples we saw throughout this year’s competition which saw us receive submissions from across Africa."
We are delighted to announce the winner is 'Triggerfish Animation Studios: The business of digital entertainment.' The case looks at how films are funded in South Africa and what returns can be expected by investors in film through the "recoupment waterfall". This is where the producers and investors of a film recoup their investments and earn returns. The case also explores the impact that video-on-demand platforms, such as Netflix and Disney+, is having on the traditional models of filmmaking. Craig Lowman, Mikael Samuelsson and Geoff Bick from The University of Cape Town, GSB will receive a prize fund of $1,500.
Also highly commended is ‘Chijioke Dozie: Dealing with Nigeria's highly skilled talent constraints'. This case study examines the talent management challenges faced by the CEO of Nigeria-based financial services company One Finance (OneFi). Mpho D. Magau and Jaco Maritz, from Johannesburg Business School, receive a prize fund of $500.
Another highly commended case is ‘DEV Mozambique: Food Security through Innovative Social Enterprise Development’. Here, Elena Gaffurini, managing partner of DEV Mozambique, set out to evaluate the impact the current business model is genuinely making on social and economic development in the region. Boris Urban, Amanda Bowen and Stephanie Townsend, from WITS submitted this case, and will be awarded $250.
Both Emerald and The Association of African Business Schools would like to thank everyone who entered this year's competition.
