Introduction

Artificial intelligence is transforming teaching, learning, and assessment in higher education, but there’s still much confusion and resistance as to the “when” and “how” regarding use in the classroom. Further complicating the discussion is that regulatory guidance has struggled to keep up on such emerging policies shaping institutional use of AI, including federal expectations around “regular and substantive interaction,” academic integrity concerns, data privacy obligations, accessibility requirements, and the limits of automated grading and instructional support.

This special issue will focus on distance learning and the AI best practices that are currently shaping the sector and will cover topics such as: AI regulation; Institutional use of AI; Students and the boundaries of AI assistance; AI as a productivity improvement tool in curriculum development; and AI and streamlining the classroom experience.
