History

The International Journal of Positive Behavioural Support (IJPBS) was published by Bild (British Institute of Learning Disabilities) from 2011 to 2025.

Established to define, develop and disseminate positive behavioural support (PBS) methodologies internationally, the journal provides a platform for sharing good PBS practice and advancing high-quality research. A core aim is to bridge the gap between academic research and practice, strengthening the evidence base with a particular focus on improving quality of life.

In addition to its regular issues, IJPBS published several influential special editions, including the 2013 Foundational Framework and Definition for Positive Behaviour Support in the UK; the 2022 Positive Behavioural Support in the UK: State of the Nation Report; the 2023 Global Perspectives on Positive Behavioural Support (guest edited by Dr Nick Gore); and the 2025 PBS and Neurodiversity special issue (guest edited by Professor Linda Bambara).

The journal was characterised by strong collaboration between academics and practitioners, and actively encouraged inclusive approaches to publishing PBS research and practice.

From 2026, the IJPBS editorial team will continue this work curating high-quality international research and practice papers for annual International Positive Behavioural Support special issues of the Tizard Learning Disability Review. As the special issue will be hosted by the Tizard Learning Disability Review, submissions will need to demonstrate clear relevance to, and implications for, people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
