Call for applications for a managing editor

Drugs, Habits and Social Policy (DHSP) journal is looking to appoint a new managing editor. DHSP is among the key publications in the field of drug policy and social studies of drug use, and offers a platform for researchers and practitioners since 2001. Previously published under the title "Drugs and Alcohol Today", the journal has been particularly keen on research and practice from under-represented regions and novel contributions from practitioner field. The journal's editorial board, consisting of leading scholars, policy-advisors and members of international practitioner and advocacy groups, offers a wide range of expertise that furthers the journal's vital role in the field.

Your role

The position is open to anyone with a background in academic research or publishing, or interest in learning about running a journal in scientific publishing. Previous experience in academic publishing is preferred. An interest in drug policy/harm reduction/sociology of drug use is an advantage. As a managing editor, you will be responsible for a number of tasks including:

  • Managing incoming submissions and conducting initial screening to assess the fit of a new submission to the journal
  • Facilitating communication between the publisher and the authors, reviewers, and guest editors of special issues and relaying matters to the technical support team
  • Acting as the main contact point for queries regarding the ScholarOne submission portal
  • Running the journal's social media profiles and supporting promotion of the journal in other ways
What we offer

We offer an opportunity to learn more about the academic publishing process behind the scenes, advance communication skills, and support knowledge dissemination. If you are researcher or seek a career in the field of drug policy and/or practice,  through this role you will become part of an important academic community dedicated to these and other questions of social justice. You will be part of a dedicated team and work closely with the two editors-in-chief in navigating topical priorities and giving visibility to under-represented and under-researched areas and voices across the spectrum of the journal's scope.

This role is supported with a quarterly honorarium from the publisher.

Application

For the expression of interest, please submit a 500-word cover letter outlining your previous experiences in publishing, research background and motivation and a CV. Please send the application documents as well as any questions regarding this announcement and details about the role to the co-Editors-in-Chief, Aysel Sultan ([email protected]) and Marta Rychert ([email protected]).

Deadline for submission of applications is May 20 2025.
