Interview series on the history of adult safeguarding

Series editor: Jeremy Dixon, Cardiff University, UK

This interview series has evolved from a book chapter written by Jeremy Dixon (2023), who is the series editor for these interviews. This chapter formed part of an observational study on adult safeguarding work and was designed to provide a potted history of adult safeguarding in England, identifying campaigns, public inquiries, political debate and policy development.

As adult safeguarding is a relatively new concern, many of the key activists and policymakers are still with us. This provides an opportunity to explore their accounts in greater depth and to obtain their views about how adult safeguarding should develop.

Published interviews to date:

An interview with Mervyn Eastman: campaigning for the recognition of older adult abuse in the 1980s and beyond

An interview with Tim Spencer-Lane: ‘perspectives on the development of social care law in relation to adult safeguarding’

An interview with Claire Hilton: perspectives on the dignity and care of older people in health and social care settings

The politics of whistleblowing and the fight to cure the NHS: an interview with Julie Bailey

An interview with Dr Deborah Kitson: the long campaign for better safeguarding for people with learning disabilities

An interview with Dr Adi Cooper OBE: an insight into the development of making safeguarding personal
