Emerald Publishing’s ‘Making Equal’ charts a path to tackle UK inequality

21st October 2025

‘Making Equal: New Visions for Prosperity in the UK’, unites the visions of senior figures across politics, academia and the voluntary sector to create new, practical solutions.

It offers a rare combination of perspectives, from policy makers to grassroots leaders, examining the root causes of inequality and practical steps for change, based on insights from the Oxford Seminar Series at Ruskin College.
Edited by Graeme Atherton and Peter John, renowned for their leadership in education and social policy, the book draws on decades of expertise.

As the Head of the Centre for Inequality and Levelling Up at Ruskin College, Atherton has over twenty years’ experience of widening access within education. While John was awarded a CBE in 2020 for his outstanding services to higher education and is currently both Vice-Chancellor of the University of West London and Principal of Ruskin College.

Harnessing their insights, John and Atherton have drawn together chapters from ex-Ministers, academics, university leaders and heads of charities. Critiques are provided for a wide range of UK systems including welfare, the criminal justice system and the economy itself.

In a time when solving inequality is an economic and moral imperative, Making Equal offers a valuable understanding and action focused exploration of the UK’s current situation.

The book is the latest move in Emerald’s support for the Sustainable Development Goals, contributing to the goal of developing a ‘Fairer Society.’

‘Making Equal’ is now available on the Emerald bookstore.
