Authors: Igor Ferraz Torres, Sandro Marden Torres and Tibério Andrade
Still under construction and less than 2 years old, numerous cracks were observed in the foundation structures of a building located in Recife, a city known for its history of alkali-aggregate reaction (AAR) cases. This paper describes the first-ever reported case in Brazil where delayed ettringite formation (DEF) has been confirmed as the sole cause of deterioration in field concrete.
Authors: Cristina Rodriguez, Andrew Hursthouse, Zaki El-Hassan
This study shows innovative solutions for small-scale treatment of portable toilets and septic tank waste. By integrating anaerobic digestion, energy recovery, and localized heating, it addresses pressing environmental and public health challenges while offering practical applications for remote and temporary settings, ensuring broad real-world impact.
Authors: Charles W. W., Ng Usman Majeed, Clarence E. Choi
This study models steep creek hazards using a flume and varying solid fractions (νs). It finds that barriers should have a Froude number (Frb) less than 1 to reduce overflow and landing distances. Watery flows have longer landing distances than dry granular flows, requiring tailored barrier spacing. A modified framework guides barrier height selection based on Frb.
Authors: Henning Lauridsen, Thomas Gierlevsen, Jonas Ostersen, et al.
This paper discusses the expansion of the Port of Hanstholm in Denmark, featuring a new western breakwater with Cubipods as the main protective armour. The breakwater was tested at Aalborg University, showing significant benefits of Cubipods.
Author: Riccardo Stucchi
This paper presents an analytical framework for designing reinforced concrete (RC) linings in hydraulic tunnels, focusing on transient behaviour. It highlights the impact of a water-filled gap between the lining and rock mass on crack formation.
6. Destabilisation of seawall ground by ocean waves - Géotechnique
Authors: Hidenori Takahashi, Lidija Zdravković, Aikaterini Tsiampousi, Nobuhito Mori
This study investigates seawall failures due to wave propagation, focusing on ground failure. Centrifuge model tests and finite-element analyses identified two main failure modes: floating of the covering panel and sliding failure of the ground.
Authors: Liqiang Sun, Yurong Zhang, Xiaowei Feng, et al.
This paper presents upper-bound solutions to calculate the reduction in load-carrying capacity of suction caissons in trenched seabeds. It incorporates failure mechanisms for caissons in intact seabeds and compares results with finite-element analyses.
Authors: Manuel Tender, João Pedro Couto, Paul Fuller, et al.
The study identifies benefits such as improved safety design and hazard perception, estimating a 20% reduction in training time and a 10% reduction in accidents. Key lessons include cost management, system portability, and ease of access, providing valuable insights for the construction industry to enhance OSH management and adopt new technologies.
9. Understanding and learning from failure - Management, Procurement and Law
Authors: Baker Henrietta, Smith Simon D Velikova Milena, Masterton Gordon, et al.
This paper presents insights from 19 interviews with UK construction personnel on understanding and learning from failure. It explores industry processes for capturing and extracting lessons from failures, revealing different types of failure and their impact on learning cycles.
10. Strategies for addressing exposure to extreme heat in a slum community - Municipal Engineer
Author: Olumuyiwa Bayode Adegun
This paper investigates coping strategies for heat stress among residents in a low-income community in Lagos, Nigeria. Using surveys and interviews, the study identifies various personal and building-related measures to combat heat.
