Raising eco-billionaires through green leadership in Africa: The 5 Ps

An ‘eco-billionaire’ is a wealthy individual whose fortune is tied to or derived from environmentally sustainable or ‘green’ businesses, technologies, or initiatives, or who actively invests a significant portion of their wealth in such areas (Wang, 2021; Anabaraonye et al., 2024). Eco-billionaires are enablers and enhancers of green entrepreneurial opportunities thereby contributing to sustainable economic growth (Anabaraonye et al., 2021; Anabaraonye et al., 2023). They are individuals who have achieved significant wealth through ventures focused on renewable energy, sustainable technologies, or other environmentally conscious practices, or who dedicate their wealth to supporting climate action and environmental conservation (Wang,2021). Eco-billionaires play an important role in building a fairer society where hunger and poverty can be eradicated while environmental challenges are solved.

Examples of eco-billionaires:

  • Elon Musk: His wealth is largely tied to Tesla, which produces electric vehicles and energy storage solutions, and SpaceX, which is involved in sustainable space exploration.
  • Robin Zeng: The founder of Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL), a leading battery manufacturer for electric vehicles, making him a significant player in the green energy sector.
  • Andrew Forrest: An Australian mining magnate who is investing heavily in green technologies and renewable energy projects.
  • Michael Bloomberg: The founder of Bloomberg LP and former mayor of New York City, who is a prominent advocate for climate action and invests in green initiatives.

Key characteristics of eco-billionaires:

  • Wealth tied to green businesses: Their wealth is directly linked to companies involved in renewable energy, sustainable transportation, or other ‘eco-friendly’ industries.
  • Active investors in green initiatives: They may invest their personal wealth in companies or projects focused on climate change mitigation and environmental conservation.
  • Advocates for climate action: Many eco-billionaires use their online platform, such as Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, X, etc., to promote awareness and action on climate change.
  • Philanthropic efforts: Some donate significant portions of their wealth to environmental causes or organisations.

Understanding green leadership

‘Green leadership’ can be defined as the practice of leading an organisation or group towards environmental sustainability by integrating sustainable practices into its operations, culture, and decision-making processes. It involves inspiring others to adopt eco-friendly behaviours, setting ambitious yet achievable sustainability goals, and fostering a culture of environmental responsibility (Khan et al., 2023; Zhong et al., 2025). Green leadership is about being aware of the environment and doing the right thing ethically (Green Leadership, 2022). The concept of raising eco-billionaires through green leadership in Africa focuses on developing a sustainable and prosperous future by leveraging the continent’s natural resources and potential for green technologies. This involves fostering green economies, attracting green finance, and empowering African youth to lead the sustainability revolution. By embracing green growth strategies, Africa can address climate change, create jobs, and build resilient communities while simultaneously driving economic development.

Green leadership can also help to enhance green entrepreneurship for sustainable economic growth in Africa. African youth are increasingly taking the lead in promoting sustainability initiatives, demonstrating the potential for grassroots movements to drive impactful change. Green finance can support sustainable industrial development by promoting energy efficiency, cleaner production processes, and the adoption of green technologies. African youth can be meaningfully engaged to maximise the green entrepreneurial opportunities in plastic recycling (Anabaraonye et al., 2022), wastewater management (Anabaraonye et al., 2023), renewable energy (Anabaraonye et al., 2024); eco-poetry (Okon et al., 2025), eco-photography (Okolo et al., 2024), or eco-musicology (Onnoghen et al., 2024).

The 5Ps of green leadership

The 5Ps of green leadership refer to people, process, product, profit, and planet. These elements are crucial for sustainable and responsible business practices, guiding leaders to make decisions that benefit not only the organisation but also the environment and society. This framework emphasises the interconnectedness of these aspects, highlighting that long-term success requires a holistic approach to sustainability.

  • People: Green leadership recognises the vital role of people in driving environmental sustainability efforts. It encompasses the well-being and engagement of employees, customers, and the broader community. It involves fostering a culture of integrity, respect, and transparency, ensuring fair labour practices, and promoting diversity and inclusion towards achieving environmental sustainability.
  • Process: This focuses on optimising operational procedures to minimise environmental impact. It involves implementing sustainable practices in supply chains, reducing waste and pollution, and conserving resources.
  • Product: This emphasises designing and producing goods and services that are environmentally friendly and socially responsible. It includes using sustainable materials, minimising packaging, and promoting circular economy principles.
  • Profit: While profit is essential for business viability, green leadership recognises that financial success should be achieved in a way that supports environmental and social goals. This involves investing in sustainable technologies, developing new markets for green products, and creating value for all stakeholders.
  • Planet: This is the overarching concern for environmental sustainability and the long-term health of the planet. Green leadership aims to minimise the carbon footprint, protect biodiversity, and contribute to climate change mitigation and adaptation.

Raising eco-billionaires in Africa involves creating a virtuous cycle where green leadership, green economies, and green finance drive sustainable development, creating wealth and prosperity while safeguarding the environment for future generations and a fairer society.
